Review
The Oculus Quest 2 now newly renamed Meta Quest 2, is considered to be the top VR headset available for beginners and veteran VR users in the market. It has been in the industry for years making it one of the pioneers in VR. It is a standalone headset that makes it easily accessible to users without worrying about tripping over cords, unlike other PC-based VR setups.
The features of the Meta Quest 2
Packed with an impressive ecosystem of games, applications, and more, it offers a smooth PC connection option that works wirelessly or through cable. It provides a new and improved powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, a high resolution of 1,920 x 1,832-pixel display per eye, 72Hz refresh rate, and sleek lightweight design, all this for $300. According to the company, the Quest 2 will be the home of groundbreaking technology that will help establish the “Metaverse” which means you must have Facebook to use the Quest 2.
The Quest 2 is lighter and smaller compared to its predecessor weighing only 500g and measuring 4.0 x 7.5 x 5.6 inches. The headset is built with smooth white plastic and foam eye mask giving it a comfortable experience and aesthetic appearance. The front plate is almost bare with its four-position tracking cameras on the edge of the display.
The left side of the headset has a USB-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The right side has its power button and LED indicator. The volume rocker is found on the underside of the headset with two pinholes for its microphones. The eye mask can be easily pulled out or adjusted allowing users with glasses to have a comfortable experience. The headband is a three-point elastic strap attached to its plastic arms allowing you to adjust it up and down. The strap connects to the headset using velcro fasteners.
The motion controller has a slightly renewed design from the original Oculus Touch. It has a rounded edge and a thicker body that will hold securely on the hand. It has rings on top to track its position with two trigger buttons that would naturally fit your fingers. There is also a space for you to rest your thumbs in case you are not actively using the joystick or trigger buttons.
Performance of the Meta Quest 2
The battery life is considered to be the main issue for this standalone VR headset. The Oculus 2 claims that it can be used for 2 to 3 hours between charges. But the time can be doubled with the Quest 2 Elite Strap Battery and carrying case for $129. It is not cheap but it will prolong your VR play sessions.
The Meta Quest 2 also uses the Guardian system as its predecessor. It lets you set boundaries in your play space so that the headset can warn you of any obstacle in your way. It works well in remembering the exact areas you chose as your play space. It also allows you to set up stationary circles for games that do not require movements.
Its head tracking is extremely accurate with its four cameras constantly tracking the area around you. The camera also tracks the controllers which have internal sensors for their motion. It provides a full 6 degrees of freedom(6DOF) gaming experience which allows you to move freely. The high-quality resolution provides a sharper and clean display.
Is the Meta Quest 2 Worth it?
The Meta Quest 2 provides a wireless VR experience with a high-quality display and excellent performance. It is beginner-friendly VR on a budget. If you have a large play space and VR-ready gaming PC, then this is for you. It has accurate sensors and newly improved software that you will love.
This VR is not recommended for users who get easily nauseous. Although it provides a promising VR experience, there are still things that they need to improve including stabilizations. It has 2 to 3 hours of battery life which is not convenient for users who play VR for a long amount of time. Also, if you have issues with being tied to Facebook, then the Quest 2 is not for you.
